Macarena Mantilla moved from Ecuador to pursue her degree in journalism at Thompson Rivers University (TRU). In the time that she has lived in Tk’emlúps (Kamloops) she has wanted to amplify the stories of people in this territory. Growing up in Quito, Ecuador taught her about varied communities where she developed more awareness about different issues.
Working at CBC radio in Kamloops allowed her to develop skills in editing and recording audio. Through university her writing skills were developed and fortified. She has had opportunities as a freelance writer in publications like the Wren. In courses at TRU, her photography and editing skills have been developed.
Some of her achievements have been inducted to the “Dean’s List” in Winter 2023. Mantilla has peer mentor certification and she worked in the Wellness Centre as a Student Ambassador for an academic year.
Her preference is writing feature articles where she can introduce varied voices and unpopular topics. She is interested in reporting on social issues, mental health, and human rights. She has covered stories focused on minorities. As an international student at TRU, she has been able to connect with several students and recognize different issues in campus. She understands the importance of ethical and truthful reporting.
